Classic auto restoration is the process of returning an older vehicle, typically 20 years old or more, to its original condition or better. It’s a blend of mechanical know-how, historical accuracy, and craftsmanship. Here’s a quick overview of what’s involved:

Main Steps in Classic Auto Restoration

  1. Planning & Research

    • Choose the vehicle: rarity, availability of parts, and sentimental value.

    • Decide on restoration type: original (OEM specs), restomod (modern upgrades), or custom.

  2. Assessment & Disassembly

    • Full inspection for rust, frame damage, and missing parts.

    • Photograph and document every part before disassembly.

    • Carefully label and store parts.

  3. Bodywork & Rust Repair

    • Strip the paint (media blasting or chemical).

    • Replace or repair rusted panels.

    • Align body panels and prep for paint.

  4. Engine & Drivetrain Rebuild

    • Rebuild or replace the engine and transmission to stock or improved specs.

    • Rework suspension, brakes, and steering components.

  5. Interior Restoration

    • Refurbish or replace seats, dashboard, carpet, and trim.

    • Ensure gauges and electrical systems work.

  6. Paint & Finishing

    • Choose original color or custom.

    • Apply primer, paint, and clear coat with proper curing time.

    • Wet-sand and buff for show-quality finish.

  7. Reassembly & Testing

    • Reinstall everything methodically.

    • Test all systems—mechanical, electrical, cooling, etc.

    • Tune and detail for final delivery.
